Ideal weight of any person primarily depends upon his/her height, generally a person is said to have ideal weight or normal weight when the BMI or body mass index is between 18.5 and 25. People belonging to different region have different physics, a person from Fareast Asia and Southeast Asia are generally leaner than a person from Middle East Asia and Europe.
Ideal weight of a person is regional (country) specific and many local authorities recommends different range of BMI for normal weight like Hospital Authority of Hong Kong recommends BMI for normal weight range as 18.5 to 22.9, In Japan the ideal weight of a person is supposedly to be of BMI of 22 or very near to it while for a person from South East Asia have BMI near to 21.
A normal weight or healthy weight person is generally regarded as having low risk towards developing heart diseases, high blood pressure, stroke and diabetes. However the athletes who may have more muscular body, more weight and higher BMI than a normal person may still have lower health risk factor. Generally the weight of these athletes depends upon the type of sports they are involved in.
Ideal weight is age dependent for children’s and young adult up to 20 years of age the ideal weight is measured by comparing the BMI of an individual child with an average BMI of children’s of same sex and of same age group. The child is considered as underweight, overweight or normal weight by measuring the percentile difference of his/her BMI with average BMI of the children’s of same sex and age group.
For elderly person typically of age 65 years and above the ideal weight is recommended to be slightly higher than his/her younger counterpart having same height. Having slight higher BMI for elderly person is generally termed as healthy sign as the same increases the overall immunity of a person. Elderly person however should not have an excess weight or obese body as the same is deterrent to their health and increase various health complications.
